Organizational requirements
Meet Ontario's AODA Web Requirements
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) require many organizations to make their websites accessible. This checklist covers the web conformance and the organizational duties.
Who it applies to
- Ontario public-sector organizations
- Private/non-profit organizations with 50+ employees
- New websites and significantly refreshed content
- Internet-facing websites and web content
The web standard
The IASR requires conformance with WCAG 2.0 Level AA โ note: WCAG 2.0, not 2.1 โ with two exceptions that are not required: 1.2.4 Captions (Live) and 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded).
AODA references WCAG 2.0
Unlike the ADA and EN 301 549, the IASR specifically references WCAG 2.0 Level AA. Meeting WCAG 2.1 AA satisfies 2.0 AA as well (2.1 is backwards-compatible), so targeting 2.1 AA keeps you compliant and more future-proof.
Beyond the website
AODA also requires accessibility policies, a multi-year plan, staff training, accessible formats on request, andโfor larger and public-sector organizationsโfiling compliance reports. This checklist includes those organizational items.
